Mathematics teachers meet in a conference held in Ogre
On 9 and 10 April 2010, Ogre Secondary School No 1 hosted the teachers conference “Evaluation in Mathematics” organized by the Latvian Association of Mathematics Teachers (LAMT) and the Project. More than 130 mathematics teachers from all regions of Latvia met in the conference.
On 9 April, the conference was opened with a lecture on significance of self-appraisal skills and necessity of their development, presented by the president of the LAMT, Associated professor Rudīte Andersone. In continuation, lectures by the Project experts - Līga Čakāne on results achievable in teaching mathematics applying formal and informal methods, and Ilze France – on assessment as the driving force of the learning process - were presented.
At the end of the day the teachers appraised animation films made by students of Ogre Secondary School No 1, as well as went on a tour in Ogre city.
During the second day of the conference, the participants were split into several ad hoc groups lead by the Project experts, with the aim of devoting into active discussions and sharing experience on the formative assessment, gradual improvement of reasoning and justification skills in the curriculum for grades 7 through 9, use of electronic study aids and planning of a topic acquisition according to the result to be achieved and the assessment applied.
The next LAMT conference on creativity in mathematics is scheduled for September.
