Natural sciences and mathematics competition for grades 7 through 9
From 5 October 2009 to 1 April 2010, a competition in natural sciences and mathematics organised by the Project is held for students of grades 7 through 9. The aim of the competition is raising the students’ interest about natural sciences and mathematics, application and enhancement of the knowledge acquired in the school in physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics. The competition is held in two stages.
From 5 October 2009 to 21 March 2010, the online stage of the competition was held on the Project homepage. On 1 April, thirty-eight students of grades 7 through 9 from all Latvia met in person for mutual competition. During the online stage of the competition the students had already proven themselves as the most erudite and strongest, providing answers online, on a weekly basis.
Each student of grades 7 through 9 in Latvia could participate in the competition, thus gathering yet inexperienced number of students with the most varied experience and knowledge in a single competition. Both the students, who had already proven themselves in the subjects of natural sciences and mathematics, and those who got interested about the referred to subjects upon getting involved into solving the competition tasks, solving the offered exercises and carrying out the experiments, competed in the competition. The competition was an opportunity for children with special needs. As a result, almost 3,000 participants registered for the competition since the beginning of the online competition stage, 435 out of them actively participated in each of the competition stages for 23 weeks, thus applying and enhancing their knowledge in physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics acquired in the school.
During the first part of the competition stage in person, the students proved their erudition by carrying out a test in the smart-board environment and solving different creative tasks in the natural sciences and mathematics. During the second part of the day, the students familiarised themselves with the practical application of the knowledge acquired in the school in mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics, by visiting dental technical laboratory “Baltic Dental Group”. At the laboratory, the applicants had the opportunity of getting involved in demonstration of experiments, making hypotheses on the process of experiments.
After the active course of the day, the competitors agreed that they would be glad to participate in similar competitions in the future, as advantages indicating both the new knowledge acquired and opportunity of mutual competing and proving oneself, as well as the skills of being competent in different sources of information. Some of the participants found that they were impatiently waiting for every next stage of the competition and were relating their future studies with the natural sciences and mathematics.
