Students of Ventspils Region meet at the event “Think Different - more Exact!”
“Think Different - more Exact!” was the slogan of the event hosted by Ugāle Secondary School on 13 May and attended by the students of grade 9 and their teachers from Ugāle, Puze, Piltene, Pope and Užava. The aim of the event was to stimulate students’ interest in natural sciences and mathematics, as well as to introduce the students of Ventspils Region to learning and extracurricular activities at Ugāle Secondary School.
The opening of the event consisted of a speech delivered by the school administration and dance and musical performances given by residents of Ugāle. After the formal opening students had a chance to meet a former student of Ugāle Secondary School – Sandra Backāne, an owner of SPA Hotel Usma and an ecologist of Ventspils forest district, who told students about entrepreneurship, qualities, skills and knowledge necessary for an entrepreneur. This conversation with students was continued by students of Ventspils University College – former students of Ugāle Secondary School – that shared their experiences regarding the acquired knowledge, skills and abilities when faced with the new modern curriculum in natural sciences and mathematics.
After conservations with former students the students split into teams and went to natural sciences rooms – 4 workrooms – in order to fulfil the following tasks:
• Biology: students measured lung volume and carried out a laboratory work about senses;
• Mathematics: students did exercises by using an interactive whiteboard;
• IT studies: students carried out and completed different types of tasks;
• Physics: students measured changes in pressure when going up the school staircase to the fourth floor.
After going through all 4 workrooms, teams met in the chemistry room in order to watch demonstrations of different exciting experiments.
While students were occupied with tasks in natural sciences, mathematics and information studies, the teachers involved in the Project shared their experiences regarding the Project, knowledge acquired in the course and teacher support materials and visited the rooms equipped within the framework of the Project, as well as learned how to work with the room equipment.
After the tasks participants had excursions to Ugāle construction workshop of pipe organs and Micros, a company building yachts, where they met owners of the enterprises and talked to them in order to draw some conclusions as to the knowledge and qualities necessary for an entrepreneur.
At the end of the event students gathered in an assembly hall of the school where they were shown a video about their activities during the course of the day and evaluated the event.
When asked to evaluate the day, students said that the event had been a great possibility to meet their peers from the school and other schools, acquire new knowledge, gain new experience and feel new emotions, as well as to look at the school from different point of view.
