Professional development of teachers
Results obtained in the research carried out in the pilot schools in science and mathematics for grades 10 to 12 in the previous project show that the key of the reform’s successful implementation is the teacher’s contribution. It is essential to provide teachers with support on how to cope with new curriculum and modern teaching-learning strategies.
Teacher in-service training courses
Project experts provide methodological support for teachers of science and mathematics by organizing in-service training courses. After piloting of the developed training programmes, the courses are offered to all teachers teaching biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics in Latvia in 2011 - 2013.
There are a 36 and a 54-hour in-service training courses devised. They are developed to allow teachers to learn all the modules on the basis of one subject or combining several subjects depending on the subjects each particular teacher is teaching. For example, in case a teacher teaches biology and chemistry, it is possible to attend a 54 or a 36-hour in-service training course on both subjects.
The aim of the course is to provide the support necessary for teachers in ensuring a contemporary teaching-learning process, therefore the course programme includes several topical themes such as novelties in the curriculum according to the guidelines of the initiated reforms in the country, organization of a diverse teaching and learning process facilitating creativity and cognitive activities, conducting and assessing of students' scientific inquiry, etc. The courses particularly focus on exchange of experience among the teachers, on practical work in laboratories and computer classes, on lesson modelling and analysis, role-plays and simulations and other innovative forms and strategies of adult training.
Applying for in-service training courses in 2011 - 2013
It is possible for teachers to apply for in-service training courses scheduled for 2011 - 2013. Courses are intended for teachers of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics teaching the above subjects in grades 7 to 9.
A 36-hour course – for teachers who are working in secondary education and who participated in the 72-hour in-service training courses offered by the project in the period from 2005 till 2008.
A 54-hour course – for teachers who are working only in primary education and have not attended the 72-hour in-service training course.
To apply for a course, each teacher fills in a separate registration form in the project web-page. All applicants will be gradually invited to seminars in 2011 - 2013 sending invitation letters to their e-mail.
